Valence & Crown

<< Back | Home | Next >>

We approach the End Game.  The last bits to be done, other than the desk top, which we're outsourcing, are the valence, and crown molding and lighting.

While total illumination is nice, only the main work area really needs lighting. The area to the right gets enough from the one flourcent (T4) over the monitor and to the left will eventually contain a printer, scanner and probably miscellaneous junk.  For now, we're just going with valence over the monitor as the rest of the cabinets have nice clean finished bottoms (and who amongst us doesn't like a nice clean finished bottom).  The valence would be superfluous.

The Big Picture with Valence and Crown

Some closeups of the crown.  Ikea is clever.  The same molding used for the valence is turned on it's side to form the crown.  Not only does this make for ease of manufacture but it eliminates the need for complicated compound miter cuts by the installer.

It took a few tries to get the one and only miter cut correct, but these things seldom go in one shot.

With the completion of the finishing work and the lighting this ends, at least for the next few weeks, updates to the site.  I may document the selection process if it seems interesting enough and I'll certainly document the installation and finished product.  More goodies, posted at random intervals, can be found here.

One question posed by a reader is the species of wood.  This wood has no species.  It's simple Medium Brown Adel, which in Swedish means: Particle Board Shit We Sell to Americans.  Actually, the material looks great is easy to work with and is environmentally friendly.  Everything is constructed from recycled materials and is itself recyclable.   Glory Be! Now I can go out and buy that Chevy Homunculus, drive 30 miles over the speed limit, toss litter out the window and blow smoke into the faces of asthmatic dwarfs  with a clear conscience.

See ya soon.  Questions and comments always welcome.
