The hotel’s main claim-to-fame: The actress Virginia Rappe was allegedly raped and later died at the hands of the silent screen comedic actor Fatty Arbuckle.  Two hung juries and one acquittal later, Arbuckle was a free, but nearly bankrupt man, his career ruined.

Local Suds

Dinner on our first night on the Left Coast was at a little Mexican place in the Mission called the Velvet Cantina.  The Margaritas were weak, but the food was very good. An odd thing — and this was our observation for all of San Francisco — was a notable lack of children. Ours was the only kid in the restaurant and, aside from the tourists near our hotel, (Union Square), there were no women pushing baby carriages or other signs that the denizens of this town have the ability to reproduce. This is in stark contrast to Chelsea, Manhattan, and Brooklyn which seem to have been turned into hatcheries in the past 10 or so years.
