After hanging the rock the seams have to be covered over to give a smooth appearance. The technique is simple, but in practice quite difficult to do well; especially on ceilings.

Fortunately, one can screw up as many times as needed to get things right. Simply apply more drywall compound ("mud"), allow to dry overnight and go over with a wet sponge to smooth the rough edges. Contrary to some home improvement shows, sanding is not necessary and creates incredible amounts of super-fine dust. Sponging or "wet sanding" is slower, but since I have a small space it didn't really matter.
